Becoming a Citizen
ਸਿਟੀਜ਼ਨਸ਼ਿਪ
Citizenship is the final step after permanent residence. The requirements are straightforward, but the residency maths catches people out more often than you would expect.
Requirements
To become a Canadian citizen you must:
- Be a permanent resident
- Have lived in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years
- Have filed your taxes where required
- Pass a test on your rights, responsibilities and knowledge of Canada
- Meet the language requirement
Where people get caught out
The three-out-of-five residency calculation counts days, not calendar years, and time spent outside Canada reduces it. Before you apply, check your physical presence carefully — an application short by even a few days is refused outright.
